Tajik
Yoram
Repertoire - Tajik
Yoram: Crossing the Caspian Sea into Central Asia, the piece to be performed is called “Yoram,” meaning “My Love” in the archaic Persian dialect of the Tajiks. The Tajik people of Central Asia boast one of the oldest and most highly developed dance traditions of the region. Tajik dancing is characterized by intricate hand movements, head slides, complex turns, and numerous leaps and squats. In this piece, the couple represents the fabled Tajik lovers, Yusuf and Zulaikho. Yusuf is the Biblical prophet Joseph, and Zulaikho is the wife of his Egyptian master – this classical Tajik romance serves as the setting for a romantic, flirtatious dance. Choreography: Arshad Jon Jilani
