Founded by H. Pinar Zengingonul, Mavi (Mah-vee) Dance has been the leading international folk dance group in Boston area since its beginning in fall 2002. With its unique repertoire influenced by the folk dance styles of Georgia, Turkey, Russia, Ossetia, Poland, Spain, Central Asia, and China, Mavi Dance represents a colorful mixture of Boston’s ethnically diverse population. By giving a modern interpretation to the rich and ancient musical heritage of the pieces being performed, Mavi Dance brings the traditional folkdances of these exotic regions into the 21st century.
The Boston Globe described Mavi Dance’s performances as being “gloriously feisty,” and the “high point of the evening” following their performance in World Music, Dance Straight Up series.
